The Full Story

The Rolex Day-Date has reigned supreme as king of all-gold wristwatches since its introduction in 1956. One of the original appeals of this watch was that all of the standard production models were crafted out of precious metal, signifying both luxury and status at a glance. Many U.S. Presidents and world leaders have been known to wear a Rolex Day-Date, including President Lyndon B. Johnson and the Dalai Lama.

The reference you see here is the 18038, which was introduced in 1978 as a part of the third series of Day-Dates. Ticking inside is the Rolex caliber 3055, an "Officially Certified Superlative Chronometer" movement with a power reserve of 48 hours. Introduced around the same time as this reference, this is the fifth generation of movement to be placed inside the Day-Date and notably features a single-quick-set date function.

This Day-Date is in overall excellent, attractive condition. The case is strong with scratches and some light nicks. The case has been previously polished. The case numbers are visible between both sets of lugs. The back of the lugs show some marks and scratches. The hallmarks are all visible and crisp.

The dial finish is great, with only a very slight patina throughout. The lume on the dial has developed patina and has aged to a creamy off-white color. The handset has some light patina. The lume on the hands has developed patina and is matching in color to the dial lume.

The dial, case, crown, and movement are all signed by Rolex. The crystal has a few light scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
